Rockingham Castle

This magnificent castle was built over 900 hundred years ago, under the instruction of William the Conqueror. Once a Royal castle it was relinquished by the crown and has since been occupied by several generations of the same family for over 400 years, and to this day still is.

Set in a panoramic location Rockingham Castle has magnificently furnished rooms from several periods and is surrounded by 12 acres of wonderfully ornate gardens. Exhibitions set out the castle’s fascinating history and there are often special events in the gardens during the summer too!

Charles Dickens spent many a summer at Rockingham Castle, making it a must for literary fans. Dickens performed regularly in the long gallery and used the idyllic setting of the castle as inspiration for his classic novel ‘Bleak House’.
